Uganda bound!

I wrote a script today. Go ahead and read on… Hollywood will be calling soon I’m sure.

You: Kelsey, where are you going?

Me: I am going to Lira, Uganda.

You: What are you doing in Uganda?

Me: I will be volunteering with the organization, Children of Peace Uganda.

For six weeks I will lead a group of children in a distance running project. This specific group of children  survived unimaginable things having been abducted, brainwashed and then forced to be child-soldiers for the Lord’s Resistance Army lead by the infamous Joseph Kony.

Research shows that sports, art therapy, and dance therapy have all been shown to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration, lessen the prevalence of depression, and minimize symptoms of anxiety and PTSD in post-combatant children and sexual abuse survivors. The children I am working with deal with these issue and more, including the harsh realities that come with being orphans, and in some cases, the challenges and hopelessness of living with HIV/AIDS.

I believe distance running will be living-giving. It will bring them joy, create bonds between the children who run together and provide a medium for working through the emotions and experiences they carry.

You: When do you leave?

Me: I am fly out of Portland, July 29th – September 12th

You: Flying all the way from Portland –> Uganda! Staying for 6 weeks! What’s that going to cost?

Me: $5,000

You: Geez, why so much?!!

Airfare $2, 200 / Lodging & food for six weeks $2,000 / Transportation $400 / Additional expenses $400 (such as malaria meds, vaccines, medical travel supplies, etc.)

You: Wow! Sweet, sounds awesome. Can in help in some way?

Me: Actually, yes! Yes please! Truthfully, I can’t get there without your help! By giving $1, $5, $10 (or more) you can help me get to Uganda to help former child-soldiers discover more about the incredible potential they have, how strong they are, how beautifully they’ve been made, and that working together as ambassadors of peace can change the world.
